What Is The Greatest Commandment In The Bible?

Christian with Bible

Matthew 22:36-40 states, "‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ Jesus replied: ‘“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.’"

This passage is known as the "Great Commandment" because Jesus is asked to summarize the entire law of God into one commandment and he responds with two commandments that are closely related: to love God with all one's heart, soul, and mind, and to love one's neighbor as oneself.

The first commandment, to love God with all one's heart, soul, and mind, is a call to devotion and worship. It is a reminder that God should be the center of our lives and that we should be committed to Him above all else. This commandment is also found in Deuteronomy 6:5, where it is known as the "Shema," which is considered the most important prayer in Jewish tradition. It serves as a reminder to put God first in our lives and to make Him the foundation of all that we do.

The second commandment, to love one's neighbor as oneself, is a call to love and service. It is a reminder that we are called to care for those around us, to be compassionate and to help others. Jesus later expands on this commandment in the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25-37. This parable teaches that our neighbor is anyone in need and we are to show love and compassion to all people, regardless of who they are.

These two commandments are closely related because loving God and loving others are interconnected. Loving God is not just about worship and devotion, but also about living a life that reflects His love and compassion. Similarly, loving others is not just about serving them, but also about showing them the love of God.

Overall, the greatest commandment in the Bible is to love God and love others. This is the foundation of all that we do as Christians, and it is through this love that we can truly fulfill the law of God. As Jesus states in Matthew 22:40, "All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

In Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus also mentioned that these two commandments are the summary of the whole law and the prophets, meaning that all the laws and teachings in the Bible are based on these two commandments. And by loving God and loving others, we can fulfill the purpose of the law and the prophets.

It is also worth mentioning that these commandments are not just a suggestion or a good idea, but a commandment, something that God requires from us. And as we obey these commandments, we grow in our relationship with God and love for others, and we will be fulfilling the purpose for which we were created.

In summary, the greatest commandment in the Bible is to love God with all one's heart, soul, and mind and to love one's neighbor as oneself. These commandments are the foundation of all that we do as Christians and by obeying them, we fulfill the law of God, the purpose of the law and the prophets and the purpose for which we were created.
