What God Expects from Us

A christian with bible

God expects many things from us.

He expects us to love him with our soul and mind (Matthew 22:37). He does not want us to keep him secret. We will always talk about the things we love. For example, a wife who loves her husband will tell her friends and family about him. However, God wants our expression of love for him to be genuine. “These people honor me with their lips but their hearts are far from me,” Christ said about the Pharisees (Matthew 15:8).

God also wants us to love our neighbors just as we love ourselves (Matthew 22:39). What you want for yourself, you should wish the same for your neighbor. You would always want the best for yourself. Do likewise for your neighbor.

God also expects us to bear fruit. A tree planted that does not bear fruit is assumed useless by the farmer and cut down. God wants us to bear fruit because he wants us to be useful to him and others just as fruit is useful to us rich in vitamins protecting the body against diseases. We bear fruit when we abide in Christ, maintaining intimacy with him (John 15:5).

He expects us to seek him first, above everything else. God desires intimacy and relationship. He is a jealous God. He is jealous when we give attention to other things over him (Deuteronomy 4:24). It’s when we seek him, that he brings other of our heart's desires to us (Matthew 6:33).

God wants us to crave knowledge. Only a fool despises knowledge (Proverbs 1:7). He considers it insignificant, but God wants us to get more knowledge of his word and other things that benefits us.

God wants us to live with an absolute peace of mind. He wants us not to be troubled by anything. Christ is the Prince of Peace. He has given us his peace and does not want our hearts to be troubled or afraid (John 14:27).
