If You Want to Make God Laugh

A christian

God is angry every day with sinners, but what do you do to make him happy?

We make God happy with our faith. Without faith, it is impossible to please Him (Hebrews 11:6). No amount of good works can compensate for a lack of faith. After all is said and done, when a man refuses to believe God, he is calling Him a liar. “He who does not believe God has made Him a liar” (1 John 5:10), and how can God be pleased by people who call Him a liar?

Faith is the only thing that gives God His proper place and puts man in his place too. It glorifies God exceedingly because it proves that we have more confidence in His eyesight than in our own.

Faith not only believes that God exists, but it also trusts Him to reward those who diligently seek Him. There is nothing about God that makes it impossible for men to believe. The difficulty is with the human will.

We also please God by our boldness to speak his truth regardless of man's opinion (1 Thessalonians 2:4). Our responsibility is to please him by the faithful proclamation of the message, no matter what man’s reaction might be. We can’t please both God and man, so we must choose to please God, who tests our hearts and then rewards us accordingly.

A steward is obligated to please the one who pays him. Preachers may sometimes be tempted to hold back the full truth for fear of repercussion from those who contribute to their support. But God is the Master, and He knows when the message is watered down or suppressed.

We may want other people to like us, and sometimes we will do almost anything to win their approval. But God wants us to put our energy into pleasing him first. Our effort to be peacemakers will usually make us more appealing to those around us, even our adversaries. But even when it doesn’t, we haven’t lost anything. We are still pleasing God, the only one who truly matters.

However, a sinner cannot please God. It is no surprise, therefore, that those who are in the flesh cannot please God. There is nothing an unsaved person can do to please God–no good works, no religious observances, no sacrificial services, absolutely nothing. First, he must take the guilty sinner’s place and receive Christ by a definite act of faith. Only then can He win God’s smile of approval.
