You Must Be Born Again

Born again Christian

A Jewish ruler named Nicodemus came by night to inquire from Jesus. He was told by Christ that he must be born again to see the kingdom of God (John 3:3).

Jesus categorized being born again into two—born of water and the Spirit (John 3:3).

To be born of water means to be reborn by the word of God. It means to be made clean. We were all born unclean in sin (Psalm 51:5). The word of God washes us clean from it (Ephesians 5:26). It means to be born by the gospel we receive at salvation. Apostle Paul told the Corinthians, “… for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.” — 1 Corinthians 4:15.

To be born of the Spirit is the regeneration of our spirit by the Spirit. God created man with body and spirit, but the sin of Adam killed his spirit, and bodies with dead spirits were transferred to all generations from the beginning to now.

God gave Adam a command not to eat from the forbidden tree or he will die (Genesis 2:17). Adam disobeyed. He did not die in body, but his spirit died and everyone born of Adam is born with a dead spirit (1 Corinthians 15:21).

At salvation after receiving the gospel, the new convert is sealed with the Spirit. The Holy Spirit dwells with him to revive his spirit and bring it back to life (Ephesians 1:13).

We must be born again because Christ said it all, “… Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” — John 3:3

We must be born again to enter the kingdom of God. No one can enter heaven with his sinful state. For this purpose, Jesus Christ was manifested to take away the sins of man (1 John 3:8).

To be born again, you should gladly receive the word of God, confess and accept Jesus as your Lord and personal savior and believe in his death and resurrection. When you do all these, you will be saved (Romans 10:9).  Congratulations!
