Lay Aside Every Besetting Sin

Besetting sin

In the Bible, besetting sins are those habitual sins that we struggle with and that hinder our spiritual growth. In Hebrews 12:1, it says, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." This verse encourages us to throw off anything that hinders us, including besetting sins.

In Romans 13:14, it says, "Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh." This verse suggests that we should focus on following Christ and not on gratifying our fleshly desires. By doing so, we can overcome our besetting sins.

In Colossians 3:5-6, it says, "Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming." This verse emphasizes the need to put to death our earthly desires, including our besetting sins.

To overcome our besetting sins, we must first recognize them and confess them to God. In 1 John 1:9, it says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." This verse reminds us that God is ready to forgive us when we confess our sins to Him.

In addition to confessing our sins, we must also take steps to avoid temptation and to resist our besetting sins. In 1 Corinthians 10:13, it says, "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it." This verse reminds us that God provides a way out of temptation, and we should look to Him for help when we are struggling with temptation.

Overall, the Bible encourages us to lay aside our besetting sins and to focus on following Christ. By recognizing our besetting sins, confessing them to God, and avoiding temptation, we can overcome them and grow in our faith.
