God's Plan for Marriage

Christian marriage

Marriage is the union of a man and woman by marital agreement. The plan of God for marriage is numerous.

God desires that the married couple become one, united to build the home. Marriage should be free from fights and quarrels. If there are any, both couples should quickly reconcile and live in peace (Genesis 2:24).

God desires and demands faithfulness from both partners. Marriage should be free from sexual immorality and adultery. He punishes anyone who defiles his or her marital bed (Hebrews 13:4).

One of the reasons God instituted marriage is to avoid the temptation of fornication (1 Corinthians 7:1-2). Marriage, to some extent, helps to avoid fornication but does not immune anyone from falling into the temptation of fornication. Discipline and self-control remain the best strategy to overcome the temptation of fornication.

God doesn’t want any Christian to be yoked in marriage with an unbeliever (2 Corinthians 6:14-15). Unbelievers are those from other religions who don’t believe in Christ and don’t practice the Christian faith. Marriage to anyone from other religions apart from Christian will cause strife. Water and oil cannot mix.

God desires that the wife submits herself to the husband and the husband should love the wife (Ephesians 5:22-25). Submission from the wife and love from the husband keeps them in perfect harmony.

God doesn’t want a divorce in marriage (Matthew 19:2-9). It’s a permanent bond between both partners. The couple should seek other good means of resolving conflict. It's God's plan for them to dwell together as one forever.

Marriage is for companionship and friendship (Genesis 2:18). The couple should not live independently of each other but should be of support to each other at all times (1 Corinthians 11:11).

God also wants both couples to forgive when they wrong each other. No one is perfect. Anyone can make mistakes. The problem isn’t in making mistakes but in the refuser to correct them and ask for forgiveness from the people it affects (Ephesians 4:31-32).

A person that finds a spouse in marriage obtains favor from God, but a person who stays faithful in marriage receives even greater blessings from God (Proverbs 18:22).

Let everything in marriage be done in love (1 Corinthians 16:14).
