What Does It Mean to Be Born Again?

A Born Again Christian

Bible Text: John 3:1-8

Born again is a Christian phrase that is commonly used, but not everyone knows the meaning.

Born again is reborn of the human spirit by the Spirit of God.

The Spirit of God reborn the human spirit because it was dead. But how and when?

God placed Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden and gave them a command.

Genesis 2:17, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

God asked them not to eat from the forbidden tree, but they disobeyed.

As God said, they died not physically, but in their spirit.

As the character of parents is transferred to their children and generation unborn, so the deadness in the spirit of Adam and Eve was transferred to all after them till the end of the world.

For mankind to live the life God wants, his spirit has to be alive. For this reason, God sent his Son, Jesus, that through him everyone can receive his Spirit that will help in recreating the spirit of man (Titus 3:5).

When the spirit of a man is recreated at the point he receives Christ, he becomes born again.

A Jewish teacher came to enquire from Jesus by night (John 3:2). Jesus said he must be born again to enter the kingdom of God. He didn't know what it means to be born again (John 3:3).

To be born again means to be reborn or recreated by the Spirit.

The flesh can only create flesh. So, only the Spirit can recreate the human spirit (John 3:6).

Everyone who accepts Jesus Christ receives the Spirit of God (Ephesians 1:13). Everyone who receives the Spirit of God is cleansed from past iniquities (2 Corinthians 5:17).

The Spirit of God recreates the spirit of man to perfection. At the perfection, the born-again man can live the victorious life God has always pre-planned for him (Jeremiah 29:11).
