Can a Christian Lose Salvation?

Eternal security is the belief that a person saved from the moment he becomes a Christian cannot lose his salvation.

It's the will of God that we should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). But every believer has a role to play in keeping his salvation.

Salvation is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8). Everyone that receives a precious gift from a friend is expected to keep it safe because it can be stolen by a jealous person.

From the above explanation, it's clear that God wants us externally saved, but salvation can be lost if the one in possession is careless with the gift entrusted to his care.

Hebrews 6:4-6, “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, [5] And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, [6] If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.”

The above Bible verses made it clear that the saved that have obtained salvation from God can “fall away” from grace and restoration of such people is difficult or impossible.

Everyone should be careful, but those under grace should be more careful.

Jesus, in John 10:28, said he has given salvation and eternal life to his people. He said they will never perish and no one can take them from him.

No one can indeed take what belongs to Christ from him, but the believer can take himself out. God is a God of free will. He does not compel anyone to remain or stay with him. A believer can take himself out of God.

How can a believer take himself out of God? Sin!

God detests sin. He turns away from anyone found guilty. He wants every sin confessed (1 John 1:9). Failure to confess sin will incur his wrath and he will turn away.

Discipline in conduct and actions is expected from every believer. Like Paul, who disciplines his body and kept it under control (1 Corinthians 9:27).

The doctrine of eternal security should be discarded in our minds. It's not a license to sin under the cover of grace. Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?

God can keep us from falling, but we have a role to play. We should watch our steps as we continue our earthly journey to heaven (Jude 1:24).
