What It Means to Be Born Again

Child of God

Jesus said to Nicodemus, “you must be born again”. Nicodemus hearing the phrase for the first time asked what it means (John 3:4).

We hear the phrase always, but many don’t understand the concept like Nicodemus.

Jesus didn’t mean to confuse anyone when he used the phrase “Born again”. To be born again literally means to come back into existence after previously being dead. This is referring to the spirit and not the body.

The concept of born again dates back to Genesis. God, after creating Adam and Eve, gave them instruction on how they should live in Eden.

God told them to take care of the garden (Genesis 2:15). He told them what they should eat and what they should not.

“But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” — Genesis 2:17 KJV

God told Adam and Eve to eat from every tree except the tree of evil. Satan tempted Eve to eat it. She gave her husband some. They disobeyed God.

God had told them they would die if they eat of the tree. They didn’t die immediately in the physical, but they died spiritually.

To die spiritually means the death of the spirit in man.

The body house the spirit. The spirit of Adam and Eve was alive until it died because of disobedience. The body continued to house their dead spirits until they died eventually after sometime.

Everyone is born alive in the body but dead in the spirit because of the sin of Adam. This result in living carnally to the things that please the flesh (John 3:6). To die in this condition means eternal doom in hell for the individual. His spirit is recreated by the Holy Spirit when he gives his life to Christ. This helps him live to the things that pertain to the spirit.

To be born again is the reborn of the spirit dead in man. It is a recreation of the spirit of man. God does this through the Holy Spirit and his word.

Jesus told Nicodemus that a man must be born of water and of the spirit to enter the kingdom of God (John 3:5).

To be born if water means to come alive again. Do you remember coming from work and feeling tired, only to take a shower and re-energized again?

To be born of water is the washing of the spirit that brings it back to life. This is done by the word and Holy Spirit, who is called the “living water” (Ephesians 5:26; John 7:38-39). This Holy Spirit through his regenerating power brings it back to life.

The man born of the spirit is like a spirit. His spirit is alive in the spirit realm. He is discerning and able to perceive things in his spirit (Mark 2:8).

They are strange to the world. You cannot understand them. They become like aliens to others because they act and speak differently (John 3:8).

When a man is born again, the spirit previously dead become alive and willing. Jesus advice such individual to continue watching and praying to remain in that state or the flesh will become willing and the spirit weak. This opens door to fall into diverse temptation (Matthew 26:41).

If the spirit is not alive and willing, it is impossible to worship God sincerely. We can do so only by our spirit, since God is a Spirit. A spirit has no business with the flesh. Spirit for the spirit. Flesh for the flesh (John 4:24).
