The Consequence of Failing to Repent

Seeking forgiveness

To repent is to change one’s mind. It means to decide in mind of turning away from sin and going to God.

It is a prerequisite for making heaven. Through it the grace to get the desired holiness in living a righteous life is received from God. Jesus Christ and John the Baptist knowing the importance of turning away from sin urged the people to repent (Matthew 3:2; 4:17).

John the Baptist in Matthew 3:12 gave the consequence of failing to repent, “Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire”.

That was in response to the Pharisees who he saw coming to his baptism. He wasn’t sure if they had the true intention to change. For this, he asked them to show evidence (fruit).

The consequence of failing to repent is hell fire. The “passport” for going there is sin. Sin is the transgression of God’s law. It involves anything done that annoys God. God always wants to be happy with his creations but Satan works tirelessly to ensure the human creation of God continually offend him with their sinful lifestyle.

Some of the sins are fornication, masturbation, drunkenness, lesbianism, homosexuality, stealing and the list goes on. God wants us to repent of these things so we can get eternal life. It’s not his will for anyone to perish (2 Peter 3:9).

No man has the power to save himself from sin, but every man has a role to play in accepting the free grace God has given to overcome sin. This free grace he has given through the death of his Son Jesus. That through his death and shedding of his blood the remission of sin and the grace to repent is received.

Christ the scripture says in Matthew 3:12 will purge his floor. This means he is cleansing his people. These are people who took the bold step to turn away from their sins. He then played his own role by doing the cleansing through the regeneration of the Holy Spirit.

Everyone has a role to play. God doesn’t force people to repent. He doesn’t force people who fail to change go to hell either. It’s all free will.

Many claim to have a change of heart, but no true evidence of such. This is like a mango tree that acts to have matured but yet to produce mango fruits.

Jesus says by their fruit you shall know them (Matthew 7:20). John urged the Pharisees to show the fruit of their change. The fruit of repentance is holy Christian lifestyle. This is not what can be hidden. Just as a fruit of a tree is openly seen, so the fruit of a holy lifestlye is seen by all.

Jesus said to the people to repent or they perish (Luke 13:3). This is the only two choice mankind has to choose from. This same message is coming to us to today because the time is short. Satan working tirelessly to ensure many goes to the lake of fire with him.

Don’t fall a victim of hell and Satan’s ploy to lead all mankind to destruction. Repent and accept Jesus by believing the gospel.
