Can the Rich Make Heaven?

Wealthy people can make heaven

It has been concluded by some that only the poor make heaven. The conclusion was drawn from the misinterpretation of the words of Jesus in Matthew 19:24 which says, “And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”

John and Jesus in their earthly ministry urged people to repent because the kingdom of heaven was at hand (Matthew 3:2; 10:7).  That means the invincible kingdom of heaven was about to be established on earth. The kingdom of heaven otherwise called the kingdom of God came when the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus at his baptism beginning his earthly ministry thereafter (Matthew 3:16-17).

The criterion to enter the kingdom of God/heaven according to Jesus and John was repentance.

When Jesus said it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God, he did not mean rich people can’t enter heaven. The kingdom of heaven he was referring to is the kingdom of heaven on earth.

Jesus, after casting out demons from someone was accused by the Pharisees that he used the power of devil to do the work (Matthew 12:24). He convincing them he did so by the power of the Holy Spirit and if truly he did, then the kingdom of God is among them (Luke 11:20). The invincible kingdom of God is on earth and will be made visible after the millennial reign of Christ (Revelation 21:1-3).

Since the criterion to enter this kingdom is repentance according to the preaching of Jesus and John, Jesus was indirectly implying that rich people on earth will find it difficult to repent to enter the earthly kingdom of God. This is because they put all their trust in their wealth and most of them don’t really find the need to serve God anymore since they believe they have got what they want already (Mark 10:24). Their wealth becomes their God.

This means it’s better for a man to find God first before he finds wealth or may not find any need for God anymore when he finds wealth first.

There are rich people in the kingdom of God, and these are people that found God before they found wealth. They use their wealth not for themselves alone but for the kingdom of God and to bring glory to him. You can spot them by their generosity, always giving to the needy even without being noticed because they know God does not bless any man for himself alone but blesses him to be a blessing to others.

It takes the grace of God for the rich to repent and enter the kingdom of God on earth and any man who does not enter the kingdom of God on earth cannot go to heaven after death. Jesus never said it is impossible but said it is only impossible to men but with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26).

Can a rich man make heaven? Absolutely yes, but only when he is willing to put God first in his life above his riches. Jesus says it is impossible to serve God and mammon at the same time (Luke 16:13).

May God help the rich and everyone make heaven at last. Amen.
