Bible Exposition on Prayer — Matthew 2:16-19

Prayer and supplication

Prayer is not just only talking to God but him giving us a response as well. It’s a tool for every Christian and consistency is required.

In the story of the wise men who visited Herod enquired from him where Jesus is born, a great lesson on prayer can be learnt in Matthew 2:16-19.

The wise men after enquiring from Herod was told by him to go and search for the newborn Jesus and bring him back a report. Herod waited for two years to get a feedback but did not get any. In anger after he felt he had been tricked by the wise men, he ordered that all children of two years and below should be slain (Matthew 2:16).

It was in fulfilment to what prophesied by Prophet Jeremiah, “In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.” — Matthew 2:18

Rama is the place where Rachel was buried, near Bethlehem, where the massacre took place. Rachel was the wife of Jacob who was called Israel and was the father and progenitor of the children of Israel.

“Rachel weeping for her children” represent the mothers that were crying for their children that were killed. They were Israelites and the children that were killed were children of Israel.

The children of Israel have always been troubled by Satan and his agents, but God always hear them when they cry to him (Exodus 3:7-10).

Rachel weeping for her children represent the mothers of the children slain crying to God in prayer. Prayer which also involve God response, God responded by striking the enemy and killer dead, “But when Herod was dead…” —  Matthew 2:19.

The Kingdom of God is a government with its own set of rules that can never be broken. The Bible says we receive not because we ask not in prayer (James 4:2). You should never expect to receive anything from God when you don’t ask in prayer.

A child who sees a snake approaching him will be bitten by it when he fails to cry out to get the attention of the mother to attend to the situation. Every child of God is expected by him to him in prayer when they are in danger.

The children of God are always troubled by Satan and his agents. Jesus says in the world we will have tribulation but the tribulations will only persist as long as we don’t pray. God does not act unless his attention is called except in time of emergency.

There is a call to pray, and it’s the only way to overcome all troubles. Go into your room, shut the door and pray prayer.
