Bible Exposition on Spiritual Warfare — Ephesians 6:11-18

Ready for spirittual warfare

The wickedness of the world is increasing and such time as this is what the Holy Bible calls the evil day and perilous time (2 Timothy 3:1). Spiritual warfare is an art we must get ourselves accustomed to or we may not be able to stand.

In Ephesians 6:11, we are admonished to put on the “whole” armor of God in spiritual warfare. This means not one of them should be left out. We are to put the whole armor of God to enable us to stand Satan against the “wiles” of the devil.

Contrary to what many believe, the wiles of the devil are not only physical afflictions/suffering, attacks, and opposition. The wiles of the devil are deceit and falsehood. This has been his major tool against people. Remember how he used it to influence Eve to disobey God, which brought untold suffering to the world.

Since Satan’s number one tool against man is falsehood, the number one armor listed that we must use in spiritual warfare is “truth” (Ephesians 6:14).

Satan is continually looking for those without truth so he can easily bite them. Those without truth are not limited to those who don’t speak the truth, but it’s inclusive. It refers to those who are not true to themselves and living the life of hypocrisy. They are those living and doing the things of God to get the praise of men instead of the praise of God. Such people are not fit for spiritual warfare.

We must also guard ourselves with the truth from God's word (John 17:17). Remember also to stand with Christ, who only is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). No man can have victory in spiritual warfare without Jesus Christ.

Another armor we must have in spiritual warfare is the breastplate of righteousness (Ephesians 6:14). This is the state of being holy and continually examining ourselves that we are still justified and acceptable before God. So many people struggle to make themselves too appealing and acceptable to men and care little if they are acceptable to God. It’s all connected to hypocrisy and lack of truth.

The next armor in spiritual warfare is the gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:15). This is not limited only to preaching the gospel, though inclusive. If we must do so, we should do it peacefully and with wisdom.

The gospel of peace is living peaceably and in harmony with everyone and avoiding disputes. The scripture says we should follow peace with all men and without which no heaven (Hebrews 12:14). The “gospel” of peace means your life should always preach peace to everyone, bringing comfort to them in words and action and not living in conflict with people. This contributes immensely to spiritual warfare.

We must also take on the shield of faith in spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:16). As earlier stated the wiles of the devil are deceit and lies. He will continually shoot arrows of doubt and unbelief to the minds of people. We are to take on faith believing that God can perform all that he has promised (Romans 4:21). The word of God is a tool we must abide in to build our faith because it contains the promises of God.

The helmet of salvation is also important in spiritual warfare. We must ensure that we are truly saved from sin. The devil cannot touch you only when you are living a pure and sinless life (1 John 5:18). Pretending to be saved when you are not is spiritual suicide. Putting on a long skirt and blouse to the church only to leave and spent the night in your lover's house will only cause your death in due time. Amend your ways.

The word of God in spiritual warfare cannot be ignored. The word of God is true. The word counter falsehood of Satan that is scattered everywhere in writings and from people. The word of God will help improve the discernment that makes you easily detect lies preached by agents of Satan.

And finally, prayer must not be ignored in spiritual warfare. Prayer quicken the Spirit of God to work in you. The Spirit of God cannot act in you unless you are connected to him through prayer. This is why we are admonished to supplicate always in the Spirit Ephesians 6:18).

May God help us all to win the battle of spiritual warfare.
